10 easy ways to lead a more sustainable life.
There is a great need for the introduction of new values in our society, where bigger is not necessarily better, where slower can be faster, and where less can be more. – Gaylord Nelson
1 – Recycle your clothing
Think before you throw it away. Ditch ‘fast’ fashion for ‘slow’ fashion. Products that are quality, made to last and are sustainably made. The fashion industry is one of the largest polluting industries in the world. Did you t takes almost 3,000 litres of water to make one cotton t shirt. Land fill is full of discarded fashion items; we can’t keep throwing these away or burning them. Get together with friends and recycle or exchange.
2 - Shopping - shop smart
Ask yourself – “do I need this?” Change your attitude around shopping. Buy less and buy better, quality not quantity, unique not mass produced e.g. vintage.
3 - Make BIG purchases matter.
Look at the star ratings/environmental impact that appliances are rated at. Purchase a hybrid or electric vehicle.
4 - Plant trees and grow a garden
Plant a vegetable garden – even small spaces can accommodate vegetables. Does that flower bed need flowers? Miniature fruit trees, herbs and edibles are much better. Donate to tree planting organisations.
5 - Do you need to print it?
Email it, print on the back of used paper. Make notes in your phone or ipad. Switch to e-bills and online newspapers and magazines
6 - Reduce your plastic use.
Use reusable shopping bags. Purchase a metal reusable water bottle – fill it each morning to use during the day. Pack your lunch in glass containers and use a reusable insulated lunch bag. Fill and recycle cleaning products from refill stores. Change to bars of soap rather than bottles of shower gel etc.
7 - Read the labels. Buy artisan products.
Go to markets or online and support artisan makers and their families. Artisan products are better quality, unique and made mindfully. Read the labels – where are your products grown and made. Are they produced in your country – eat seasonal.
8 - Conserve water
Fix leaks, don’t let the toilet run. Wash full loads in washing machine and dishwasher. Shower with a water saving shower head - not bath. Turn the tap off when brushing your teeth and shaving.
9 – Walk more, drive less
Ditch the car for journeys less than a mile or two. If you can’t walk, car share.
Use your walk as your warm up and get some fresh air and the walk is good for you medically.
10 – Get involved in your community – talk about this.
Talk about sustainable living with each other. Everyone has an idea that is new or helpful. Talk about the issues and spread the word – speak up if you see things that are not sustainable.
If we all live mindfully and do one little thing – that adds up to a huge change for our planet.
